Background
Milo Greene is what happens when your childhood imagination meets pure, raw talent. Formed in Los Angeles, this indie pop band is made up of Elizabeth Olsen’s husband Robbie Arnett, Graham Fink, and Marlana Sheetz. They are a relatively new band, debuting with a self-titled album in 2012. They have produced two more albums and several singles since then. Let’s dive into a few of them today.
Outstanding Track #1: White Lies (Control, 2015)
The first track off of their sophomore album Control, (excluding the prelude) White Lies is a fairy-tale, floating type of song. The vocals on this song are near perfection, as Marlana Sheetz weaves pure poetry over the fun, high-energy beat. This song is a perfect example of what makes Sheetz and the rest of Milo Greene so special: the songs are just pure, untamed fun.
Outstanding Track #2: Move (Adult Contemporary, 2018)
A standout track from their most recent album Adult Contemporary, Move is definitely a song that walks the line between eerie and seductive. After all, lines like “and you’re haunting my sleep so I’ll stay awake” don’t exactly match the typical Milo Green vibe. But that doesn’t make the song worse - if anything, this track is so good because its so experimental. The conclusion? A smash hit.
Outstanding Track #3: I Know About You (Never Ender EP, 2017)
In between their second and third albums, Milo Greene dropped a surprise release: the Never Ender EP. In it were five songs that illustrated heartbreak, lust, and joy. But I Know About You was the best representation of the EP, because it explores all three themes in one emotionally charged song. I Know About You may not be one of Milo Greene’s most famous songs, but its emotional depth makes it outstanding nonetheless.
Album Review: Milo Greene (2012)
The debut that started it all: Milo Greene. It’s bold, and brave, to name your first album after yourself, and yet that’s exactly what Milo Greene did - and boy did it work. From the very first track, What’s The Matter, Milo Greene sets the tone: looking at a dark sky, and searching for the cracks of sunlight that shine on through. Songs like 1957 and Son my Son are likewise extremely uplifting songs, in between songs like Polaroid and Silent Way, songs that are quite the opposite. The album is a 36 minute, 36 second journey with no destination - but maybe that’s how Milo Greene likes it. After all, in the words of the closing track, Autumn Tree, “And i can’t move on, linger on, linger on.” Maybe that’s the message, or maybe I’m just looking too deep. Either way, this album is worth a little bit of your time to listen, and a lot more time to reflect afterwards.
Standout Tracks: 1957, What’s The Matter, Don’t You Give Up On Me
Album Score: 8.4/10
Conclusion
Milo Greene is here, there, everywhere and nowhere. In your mind and in your heart, yet at the same time thousands of miles away, exploring the depths of your soul. Thanks for reading this week’s edition of Weekly Review on Milo Greene!
