Background
Ark Woods is what I imagine Bruno Mars would sound like if he decided to pursue a career in Funky Jazz Pop/Rap. From Hawaii, Ark Woods is a combination of Soul-Train era beats and J Cole level flows. Everything is silky smooth with this guy, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he blows up soon.
Outstanding Track #1: She Stole My Heart (Hell and HI Water 2, 2019)
This is Ark Woods’ most streamed song. It has an amazing, silky smooth flow (not surprising) and is one of his most pop-oriented songs to date - the opening is still rap, but the song quickly delves into a very catchy chorus. Whether the song is about Ark Woods or not, it definitely leaves an impression.
Outstanding Track #2: First Flight to Mars (2022)
I won’t lie - the FIFA 23 soundtrack absolutely put me onto this song, and honestly, all of Ark Woods. I am really glad I followed this path though. Anyway, this song is definitely one of Ark’s best (in my opinion). The chorus is just so catchy, and you can throw this song on in pretty much any situation and it will fit. Even the lyrics are introspective and carry a deeper message. Honestly, this may be one of the best songs I have ever reviewed on Underground UP. Highly, highly recommend.
Outstanding Track #3: Ay What Up (Lemme Vibe)(2024)
This song makes me feel like I am a skate park demon from Oakland, California who is ready to start a new life (In LA). Genuinely an amazing upbeat song and makes me want to just dance. Nothing more to say here.
Album Review: Hell and HI Water 2 (2019)
I think that of the two HIWs, this is the better one - not surprising, considering its the second version, which gave Ark Woods more time to evolve. That being said, this album isn’t particularly special in any way. It doesn’t contain spectacular highs and dramatic lows, and it doesn’t excite you in any particular way. But that’s just it - this album is remarkably consistent. There is not a single track that makes me think “wow, this is terrible” or “this could have been better.” Every track is what it is: a solid listen that I can go back to, with solid replay value and solid hooks and verses. That being said, there are a couple songs that rise above the rest. For starters, (as seen in Outstanding Track #1), She Stole My Heart is excellent. Smooth beat, silky smooth flow, and honestly just a very good track. On top of that, songs like The Motiion and True Way also standout for their easy-to-listen-to nature. Overall, not much else to say about this album: it’s really solid and does everything right.
Standout Tracks: She Stole My Heart, The Motiion, True Way
Album Rating: 7.1/10
